Gia Margaret is a recent discovery for me, one that I’m sure would be mentioned multiple times if this blog had continued running. The first time I saw her was this year at The Great Escape, Gia was clearly suffering with illness on the evening but a stripped-back, intimate set delivered to a silent Komedia was more than enough to make me full in love with her music.
There’s such emotional strength to her song-craft, it’s beautiful yet intense, serene yet difficult, light yet dark, it’s basically everything that I love. I think Birthday is probably my favourite track from her debut album There’s Always Glimmer, it sums that up devastatingly, lulled around sparse guitar and percussion that gently floats to allow the vulnerable vocals to shine. It’s just gorgeous.
Get well soon Gia, I know one person who will be at any show you do in the UK next year.
