It’s hard to pick just a single track by Marissa Nadler, her music is meant to be consumed as part of a cathartic experience where you emerge yourself fully and quickly lose an hour in a mediative, dreamlike bliss.
However, I couldn’t overlook the beauty of Drive, the opening track from arguably her strongest album to date July.
The track, like the rest of the album (or indeed anything from her 2018 album For My Crimes which I could just have easily picked here), is a masterclass in atmosphere. A perfect balance of space and intoxication, filled with a serene guitar line and Marissa’s ethereal vocals. If it doesn’t make you tingle, there’s something wrong with you.
An artist I’ve only seen perform twice due to my own stupidity (and an ocean between us), I should correct that when she returns to the UK.
