I always enjoyed seeing The Jezabels (the band haven’t officially split but also haven’t released anything for a couple of years now). You were guaranteed a euphoric show filled with killer tracks and the utterly commanding stage presence of vocalist Hayley Mary. I’m surprised they never quite clicked with UK audiences, despite playing some reasonable venues, they never took over from the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s like I thought they could.
The Aussie quartet released a series of rousing EP’s and followed them with a couple of melodramatic LP’s, my favourite track of which is Sahara Mahala, the centrepiece track on the bands third EP Dark Storm. An aptly titled beast that sums up the juggernaut style of the band, filled with soaring guitars, crashing drum crescendos and sweeping piano. It’s a confident and direct indie-pop style that has me singing along almost ten years later.
Hayley Mary has very recently announced a solo record, perhaps she remains a star in waiting.
