Albums of 2016 - Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation - Mirage

One of the most complete and seamless albums of 2016, Mirage, the second release in as many years from Sweden's Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation is a wonderfully immersive psyche-pop record that will have you hypnotised from the get-go.

"The State (I'm In)" kicks off Mirage and sums that up.  a hazy blend mix of throbbing synths, glistening guitar and forthright percussion, with Josefin's ethereal vocals floating on top, it's a gorgeous summer breeze of a track. "Sister Green Eyes" is moodier, combining repeating, droning rhythms with gauzy vocals and ominous intent. Both sublime.

Honestly, I could easily pick any track to laud with praise, the duo of tracks "In Madrid / Rainbow Lollipop" merge into one combine pulsing electronics with irresistible poised words. The atmosphere remains throughout, it's contagious and romantic all the same, never more so than on perhaps the absolute highlight "Rushing Through My Mind".

Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation are one of two bands I've not seen that I really, really fucking want to (the other is my next post). I've managed to miss them in London already and their next show coincides with when I'll typically be in Scandinavia myself. I hope I can break my duck soon, they promise to be an absolute revelation.

Albums of 2015 #16 - Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation - Horse Dance

Swedish quintet Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation came out of nowhere at the back end of summer with a seasonally but perhaps misleading titled "Sunny Afternoon", not a surf-pop track to add to you bbq playlist at all but a dark, sweeping psychedelic beauty Gathering momentum as it goes along and surrounded by a heady percussive heart, it bristles with excitement and intent around its commanding vocals and powerful, precise beats.

The rest of their debut album Horse Dance is just as addictive, opener "Dunes" is exhilarating from the out-set, with wave after wave of sprawling soundscapes and kaleidoscopic synths while “Take Me Beyond” reminds me of a softer, dreamier Toy, there’s these swooning Krautrock-type extended sequences which glisten amongst airy vocals, weaving and pulsing along as it continually hooks you further into its hypnotising world.

There are enough fresh ideas for Horse Dance not to fit into the ‘just another psychedelic album’ critique, the giddy, dizzying rhythm of “Sanity” or the paranoid mysticism of “You Have Arrived” both reveal a more experimental side to the quintet and the dancey, almost tribal opening to the incredible "Green Blue Fields" revels in its scale before slowly introducing layers of driving guitars before taking you on an explosive, dark and dreamy trip. One I’m all to happy to buy a repeat ticket for.

Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation #2 - Take Me Beyond

I really took to the witchy, psychedelic feel of Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation’s “Sunny Afternoon” last month. They return with the latest taster of their debut album Horse Dance due via Rocket Recordings on November 6th “Take Me Beyond”.

The track is a kaleidoscopic beauty that has you imagining a softer, dreamier Toy, there’s these swooning Krautrock-type extended sequences which glisten amongst airy vocals, weaving and pulsing along as it continually hooks you into its shimmering, hypnotic state. The sort of track that has you instantly craving more.

The band play their first ever UK gig on November 18th at London's Shacklewell Arms - tickets.

Now I like this, there's this hint of madness that always finds favour with me and amongst sweeping psychedelic guitars surrounded by heady percussive heart is a track that bristles with dramatic excitement and intent.

The title of the track "Sunny Afternoon" by Swedish quintet Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation is perhaps misleading, unless we are of course talking about the afternoon leading up to the burning of the wicker man effigy. "Sunny Afternoon" though, is instantly addictive, full of propulsive, powerful rhythms and a groove that swarms into the listeners mind around equally commanding vocals and soon your pulled into it's darkly hypnotic world.

Their debut album Horse Dance is due via Rocket Recordings on November 6th.
